History of the 818 Building

Built sometime in the 1890's this lovely old building was at first a home, lived in by the manager of Wells Fargo Drayage, when Wells Fargo Company was the largest freight hauler on the west coast. The home was shared by several families during the Great Depression. It fell into disrepair and became a cheap boarding house by the mid-1900's. In the 1970's it was stripped out to the studs, insulated, re-wired, re-plumbed and converted to professional office spaces. The building is beautifully maintained.

Next block north, between 16th and 17th streets sits a large brick building, now the home of Radio Cab, which was the Wells Fargo wagon repair barn.  Further north on the east side of 17th is another brick building, once offices and warehousing near stables, now home to a dance company.
